Greetings,
Started searching filled area at base of causeway built around the turn of the century, lots of penny hits, got what I think may be another colonial cent (same diameter, smaller than a George penny),
Turned a clump of mud, found a modern penny, scanned the pile again,
peeled it open and the Sun Just Shined !
Bright as the day it was milled, 1780 Netherlands trade ducat, sent to ceylon for spice payments, then back to NH, Or maybe stopped here on the way,
    Maybe I'll go back today......

Ceylon is now Sri Lanka in 2004 that huge title wave hit it .  After over two thousand years of rule by local kingdoms, parts of Sri Lanka were colonized by Portugal and the Netherlands beginning in the 16th century, before control of the entire country was ceded to the British Empire in 1815.

Ceylon (former name of the British crown colony established in 1798) is the big island off the SE coast of India;  now called Sri Lanka since it became a republic in 1972.

Great find, another trade ducat, they are really common nowadays.  Although Bio-pro's (you know who I mean) is somewhat older, yours has more style.  And better yet, you found it in the States!  He has not matched that yet in any way (only finding American gold coins).  Also congratulations for making the banner!

great Find icon_thumleft

it is a Holland, United Netherlands, ducat, 1780

(what is a Ceylon  Trade Ducat  ??) i dont think thats the right name ?

the Latin legend “CONCORDIA.RES PAR.CRES.HOL” expands to ( Concordia Res Parvae Crescunt Hollandiae,) which translates as “Through unity little things grow – Holland” (Union is strength !

Reverse: Latin legend - MO:ORD PROVIN FOEDER BELG.AD LEG.IMP. expands to  (MOneta ORDinum PROVINciarum FOEDERatorum BELGicarum AD LEGem IMPerii)
which translates “Coin of the Provinces of the United Netherlands According To The Law of The Empire !

the Weight of a Ducat , is 3,5 grams (excact)

and the ducat is made off 98,6 %  pure gold

i have found two ducat,s in holland ( but thats in holland)  in Ceylon is very special

congratulations with this great find

Yes a Trade Ducat is the correct name, this one was sent to Ceylon I suppose.  Many coins produced at that time were only for trade, mostly for the VOC.  Were not coins that went into the normal circulation.  In fact most gold coins back then were for trade (large trade). You did not go to a store with a gold coin to buy shoes.

Thanks Woody,
this was a long issued coin, with coins from 1603-1793,
I remember back when I found it, I had some difficulty finding web info.
there is some, but most Netherlands Ducats listed are the post 1793 design.
It is far from rare, I was rather disappointed to see the values.
But to me, searching in mud up to my knees, mostly finding toasted copper & whatsits,
  "PRICELESS'

(what is a Ceylon  Trade Ducat  ??) i dont think thats the right name ?
greatings from Bubbas

But to me, searching in mud up to my knees, mostly finding toasted copper & whatsits,
  "PRICELESS'
I agree with you completely about the priceless.  I have found 9 gold coins so far, the oldest was from the year 60, a small priceless thing.  Some others from 1100 to 1500. I have never looked up a price for the coins, does not interest me at all.  They are ALL rare, people always say yes I want to know the price to see if its rare or not, no, All gold coins are rare.  (you don't find them in your change).

Sorry I missed this one Herbie, congrats on your making the Banner with it too! icon_thumright

How are you making out sorting through all those coin rolls, any keepers there?

Have a great weekend buddy!

Dave

I love hunting old relic sites . . . as I feel
the imprint of past lives often linger there.

I view relic sites as windows to the past, sacred places
in a way, yet at the same time attesting to the reality
that the past is still very much a part of our today!

Greetings Dave,
I'm surprised to have this post back up top again!
I've had 3 'Weak in the knees' finds, this was my second, and only about two months into my detecting career.
I am experiencing the find all over again, Thought it was a Cracker Jack token when I first saw it, then picked it up, & here come the knees & stomach feeling, it may have been a little different than finding a gold in dry earth where the coins surface is obscured, it was shiny as can be, the size of a nickel, and wafer thin.
I put my detector on the dock, (people had been within feet of this coin daily since it was lost) & went up the beach to my friends house, (I originally started searching this area looking for a ring she lost many years ago) ,
"Jaynelookatthiscoinits1780andIdontknowwhereitsfro mbutitsgoldanditlooksbrandnew"  I was literally panting.  I'm posting the cellphone pic when I put it back on the mudpile, I can't say that I was able to take a 'in situ', but this is about 5 minutes 'post situ' and on the original pile.
In the following weeks I excavated a foot or so of mud from the surrounding area
to see if there was any more to be found, one is what I was granted and I'm very happy with that. there is a gravel layer about a foot under the mud that stops everything anyway, I'm sure this is the reason i've made so many mud finds here.
without the gravel, everything would sink below detectable levels.
I am trembling a bit now, even after all this time remembering this find.
Oh, about the Cent rolls, I've made a master list of good dates, and separated about half of the coins into decade piles.
Now I've learned that finding errors are where I'm most likely to make a good find than just a rare date, a small cud on one can turn a 15c coin into a $20 coin (or more)
While just looking at dates , I've found 4 errors. They are posted in "My Best Finds",
'Show us your Best Error Coins' topic.
I will be searching these all winter I believe.
I'm gonna get another cup of coffee & calm down, it's 3:52 AM, had to get an early start today.
best to you & yours Dave thumbsup

Hello Woody,
I just browsed through some of your posts, I remember reading your story about the coins you found as a youngster, & the candy store owner who was happy to accept them.
One of the best posts I've read!
I thoroughly enjoy your knowledgeable and entertaining replies.
Congrats on the Gold coins you've found.
 Those are some early Treasures!
Good day & Best digs to You! thumbsup

Hi Herbie

Thanks for your message.  Yea, the coins in the tin can were one of the things that just stays with you.  I had actually almost forgot about it until I started metal detecting, then it came back.  Had luck with gold coins, found all but 2 in Holland. In 2009 I found my first in England, after searching there for 14 years, and last year another of the exact same coin, other date, but 10 miles apart.  That is wierd too.

Have not been hunting much since November, freezing, cold, snow.  But now its warmed up, but rain rain rain... you never win.

Thanks for enjoying some of my messages....  Did you ever read the story in the Searcher, May 09? About the ground out of the center of Amsterdam?
