A little more of a story to go with that Stellar find and I'll vote BANNER on it.  The plate has EVERYTHING going for it--including the presence of all the hooks.  The face of it looks a little odd, so I'll have to do some looking into that.  It isn't the thin, Tennessee style plate--but might be the Atlanta style one...  But it looks genuine to me as of now.

GREAT find!

Now get that story written so this can go up top!   headbang

I also vote Banner for this Fantastic Find!!! Congratulations

One time a good friend of mine and I were hunting a soon to be new school site.  They were
tearing down many old houses.  My buddy was hunting a hill of dirt when he got this signal.  He pulls out what he thought was a Budwiser Beer Buckle.  I looked at it and told him it looked like
a Civil War buckle.  Sure enough it was a Officers Sword Belt plate in very good condition.  By the way, we were hunting in the Great State of OHIO!!

You just never know what you will find.

Again, Congratulations

That is ONE FINNNNNNNNNNE Plate!!!!   notworthy notworthy   That Plate is one of the BEST preserved CSA Plates that I've seen in a LONG TIME!!!!!  I cannot believe that you dug it all the way up in Illinois.  There is NO DOUBT that is the REAL DEAL.  Everything is right about it; the hooks, the style, the wearing.  Could not ask for a a better find.  That is MY dream find there.  Congrats buddy, enjoy it, many of us Southern Boys don't have one of those so you better enjoy it being from the North!  Banner find ALL THE WAY!!!  I'm glad that you posted photos of it with the dirt clumped up on it.  It lets everyone know that you really DID dig it!  icon_thumleft  headbang headbang headbang headbang headbang

P.S.  Yes Buck, you're right about this being an Atlanta style...They made them in Atlanta and in my Hometown just an hour and 20 minutes South of Atlanta in Columbus.  You'll see "Columbus Depot" mentioned alot when talking about different shell jackets, plates, ammunition, etc because it was one of the biggest textile and goods producers in the entire Confederacy.

How should he finish cleaning it up? What a find!

In my opinion, the cleaning job is finished.  Leave the concretion on the face of the plate alone or have it professionally removed.  That's to nice of a buckle to dick around with any sort of harsh cleaning method.  Even if the concretion were removed--say, with a wooden toothpick--there might be an odd orange, or brass colored lack of patina underneath.  So it might be a lose/lose situation, and the plate might have to go in to be touched up anyhow.  I would leave it as-is.  The patina is nicer than what one could hope for, it's not bent or plough-damaged, and all the hooks are there.   thumbsup

Cheers,

Buckles

What a great recovery, this gives me hope. I live about an hour and a half south of Quincy in Illinois and have found several Civil war buttons,3 ring bullets, spencer casings and even a volunteer infintry badge but never anything confederate related. I pass by Quincy on the river about once a week.

I could be wrong about this, but I think there was a prison camp at camp butler in springfield illinois which is about 90 to 100 miles east of quincy. I'm about 60 miles east of quincy and have found a couple civil war buttons but nothing as nice as this find. anyone in my area that would like to get together for a hunt is welcome to contact me.

These could be the sleepers in Illinois and Ohio. One of my ancestors was captured at the Battle of Nashville and taken POW to Camp Chase in Ohio. Maybe if you hunt the area between the railroad and the camp you may find some more great finds. The Confederates who were taken prisoner and taken up north may have lost a lot of items. These could be some good areas to research. Again great find.

After doing some checking, I believe this is the Atlanta Arsenal style cast rectangular C.S.A.

That's quite a FINE $2500.00 find.   thumbsup

Cheers,

Buck

How should he finish cleaning it up? What a find!

In my opinion, the cleaning job is finished.  Leave the concretion on the face of the plate alone or have it professionally removed.  That's to nice of a buckle to dick around with any sort of harsh cleaning method.  Even if the concretion were removed--say, with a wooden toothpick--there might be an odd orange, or brass colored lack of patina underneath.  So it might be a lose/lose situation, and the plate might have to go in to be touched up anyhow.  I would leave it as-is.  The patina is nicer than what one could hope for, it's not bent or plough-damaged, and all the hooks are there.   thumbsup

Cheers,

Buckles

I'm glad to see this find in the banner. It definitely deserves to be there. Leave it just like it is. That's the best dug CSA plate i've seen in years. Congrats on such a nice find. thumbsup

Great find!  My Great Great Grandaddy spent almost 3 years at the Rock Island IL Prison as a POW.  He was in the 6th Fla Infantry and was bayonetted and captured near Chattanooga, TN during the battle of missionary ridge.  The story goes that after the war he rode trains but mostly walked back to his home in NW Florida.

Again GREAT FIND!

Just as cool as the first time I read this post but what's the deal with all the old threads getting dug up lately ? Is it because it's too cold to get out and do any detecting ? When I click on TODAYS finds I don't expect to watch reruns...
