check the last post of mine for the update Oct. 13, 2006

Looky here what i dug up this morn !!!! Its SOOOOOOO neat !!!!!!!!!!!!! Its a coin holder made of German sliver !!! In the shape of a scarab bug of Egypt !!!!! I rinsed it off a little because i didn't really know what it was ! I LOVE THIS HOBBY!!!!!

This is by far the most best thing i have ever dug up ! I found it buried in a yard maybe on purpose or by kids !?
I believe it to be a Egyptian Revival piece ! I will post pics of it cleaned up later i think it will come out nicely !Too bad there were no old coins in it ! LOL ! I am so excited !!! i will be back later with the clean up results !!!!!!

I love seeing unique finds like that!!  Don't be in a hurry to clean it and accidentally damage it or anything - take your time and savor the find Smiley.  Now of course though you have to tell us the story of actually finding it!!!

How deep was it?  What is the yard like?  Do you know any history of the yard or previous owners? etc...

Excellent find!!!  Congrats - It'll be tough to top that one for awhile, but I'm sure you will Smiley

The yard once held a Victorian house and i just got permisson the other day to search it.The house was torn down a month ago because it was in disrepair.I am figuring that the bug was somewhere in the house before it was torn down and when it was torn down it got bulldozed into the dirt below.(thats how i think its is such great condition,it was in the house out of the elements )I found it at about 3 to 4 inches under. You should of seen my eyes when i dug 'er up ! LOL ! they were bulging ! I am SOOOO glad i didn't hit it with my shovel ! This find was in 10 minutes of my arrival ! I was so happy i came home to clean it up ! LOL ! i am going back to the area later today to search for more treasures !!!!
I will post updated pics on this thread later on today when i got it shining ! Stay tuned ! LOL

Great story. You're right, this hobby is the best.

Over the years I've done very well hunting sites where old houses once stood. Many people never think about these places. An old Victorian mansion torn down and a new house built on the lot. Sometimes the lot is left vacant.

House sites always have been great hunting sites. Last year a Forum member (lonewolfe) found a large cent and U.S. gold piece by a home/apartment house type of site.

Best to you!

I remember Lonewolfs story, it was amazing! This past weekend I found some very cool stuff in my yard, also when I first started detecting I found an 1897 Liberty (my oldest & best coin find) in my own backyard. Im starting to realize that maybe the parks & scools arent my best bet for cool finds! Im still amazed at how well you are doing Reddie, your enthusiasm is very infectious! Also, has you husband seen this find yet? I bet that'll get him going, get him interested, eh? Look forward to your "after clean-up pics"!  Smiley

Well I spent some time trying to find something online about WHSCO but could not find much about the mark. Some similiar items on ebay including a rather plain coin/bill fold. I've tried different variations w.h.s co, whs company, whsco, but nothing really popped up. Tried looking up the makers mark on a website for silver hallmarks/makers marks but again came up empty. I'm sure someone on here could find something out for you if you wanted them to. I was just curious for myself.

That is one beautiful bug, Reddie!

The small coat of arms, evidently added later, is that of the college fraternity Phi Delta Theta and was probably taken from a member's frat pin.  (See below.)

BTW, there's a similar coin holder (without the coat of arms) on eBay right now:

All newbies eventually make that one find that hooks 'em for good, if they stick with it long enough.  That's the key.  Some folks get lucky straight off, and others get discouraged too soon, or quit, when they find out it ain't as easy as other folks make it look.  I was not one of the ones who had a lot of "beginner's luck", but I suppose I found enough modest goodies to keep at it until the "real" finds came along.

For me, the find that clinched it happened in August of 1993.  I was discouraged and finding nothing, and was walking back to the car when I got a decent "penny" signal that had a 3-4" depth reading.  I figured it was old enough to be a Wheatie, so started digging.  At the time, my oldest coin was a 1926 Wheat cent, so I was hoping to set my oldest date back.  As it happens, I did, and got silvered, too!  It was not a Wheatie, but rather a nice 1899 Barber dime.  That was my first coin from the 1800s.  Only about an hour later, at the same site, I set my oldest date back again, even further, with an 1875 Indian cent, and as a bonus, I got a 1941-D silver quarter near that.

That afternoon I was hooked, and knew that I would never stop being a detectorist until the day I am too old to walk and swing the coil.  I've had some long periods of inactivity since then, but I will probably never quit.  Just think, I might have quit for good if I had made it to the car that day instead of finding that Barber dime.

I have since set my oldest-dated coin back into the 1700s, and then the 1600s.  To go back past my current-oldest date of 1658, I might have to travel to England or something, though it is still possible here.

That's a fabulous find, and I welcome you to the "Best Of"!  (Just got my first "Best Of" slot, myself, yesterday).

I'd say you're a "lifer", now, eh?
