Okay I know you guys like photos but heres what im going to do... I really need to start organizing this stuff and go through dates and mint marks and everything so Im going to seperate everything by type and give you a list of what I have. Then I will take some nice pictures in the end. Thanks

Battlecat, after you catch your breath and start thinking of selling the coins I would recommend ebay. Now as to how to divide up the lots I'm not too sure. And of coarse don't forget to keep a few for yourself. ;) I'm glad you are looking after your grandfather. Your kindness will come back to you someday. Curious as to the Indian Heads - probably mostly late 1800's and a lot of the 1907,1905, etc. Any good IH dates? Nice 1860's and 1870's IH's go for some good $$$$. Mirage |

Don't discount the clad as just clad, without looking them over first.
This man knew what he was doing. So some of it could be mint errors or certain variaties and so on. Even clad has it's rare coins. HH

Yikes! I'm gonna be dreaming about those boxes and their contents for the next few weeks. I'm absolutely not complaining, I'm just wishing I had the opportunity to run my fingers through some cache like that. Holy crap, that is some kinda great coinage and currency. The stuff of which dreams are made (and seldom realized).
Girlfriend's grandpa should be even more appreciated now, and for the remainder of his long and healthy life, for his foresight and generosity. The man is my newest hero!!! Ah, the elderly, truly our "treasure" and the one most often overlooked. Ask grandpa if he remembers the locations of any outdoor dance floors or picnic grounds or ballfields or any other place people may have lost coins long ago. Then do your research. I'm telling you, grandpa may be a true "gold mine" of information. Give it a try, it probably can't hurt him or you and gf.

Thanks guys I will be searching the clad also.. There is also 150 more rolls of wheats to search, thats a totol of over 270 rolls of wheats.
I found a little box last night that had 4 1909 wheats two of them with vdb but no s mint mark. also the mercs are all sorted 6 1916 but none with a d ledgable.. All worn around the edeges so if one was a d we will never know

I have just started setting up auctions in turbo list and will be uploading them to ebay later today. I will provide a link in the sale section here for everyone. Dont worry I pulled some for Leigh and I,(Grandpas Wishes), and also spoke to him last night about selling some of it.. He still insists he would be happy with face value, and I still refuse to give only face value.. Boy we are almost identical. We are both Stuborn as heck as is Leigh Annes father... No wonder she loves me, Im just like the two most important men in her life! I know a few of you are not happy that im selling this stuff, But the man had 30k in the bank a few years ago and family members have taken advantage of him and left him with less then 2k, And if you saw the look on his face when we brought over the 501.00 from the first batch of clad ( yes we searched through it first) Then most of you would do the same Thanks for sharing the first night of this find with me. All of those that were on saw it as I did.. I would take out 2 or three items and post a few photos and read the great comments, then go back and take 3 more photos and so on. It was like you guys were here with me, opening everything while I was. It was great and lots of fun!! |

DON'T!!!. If you plan to sell them, don't clean them. Those damm things get oxidized easy though It's annoying for sure, but if you clean them, they're worthless. If you can't sell them, maybe then you can clean them and sell them as cleaned. They won't fetch nearly as much, but I'm sure you could get rid of them. |

No "S" but there is another high releif peace and a few cc morgans. I am trying to get caught up on all my shipping and then I will list more stuff. Alot of the stuff in these ;ast boxes are foriegn coins and 1970s, Then theres a bunch of books. Man these whitman folders make silver change all kinds of neat colors.

See what I get for not being on the forum for awhile? Wow!! This is truly the best story I've ever read on here! I hope that the EBAY sales went well and you were able to raise some good bucks for Grandpa. He sounds like a very sweet man and was done so wrong by the other family members. Good God, that is a nice cache of currency. The bills alone if sold on Ebay would command a nice price. The $1 silver certificates even in circulated condition as shown on the photos will fetch at the very least $3-4 a piece. Those $5 red/blue seals will also sell well. That 100 something in face value is more like several hundred dollars. Unless you need the money, I'd keep what grandpa is willing to part with. On the other side, open up a paypal account for grandpa's funds to start rolling in if he wants to cash out on his treasures.

When you go to sell them don't put them all up at once or you will flood the market and the price will be driven down. With that much silver you could almost sink the silver market! My dad had a small cache in his later years and one summer he gave it all to the grandkids a little at a time and they spent it on pop, candy and bubble gum! I didn't know about it until a couple of years later. It was worth only a couple hundred dollars at the time but today it would be worth a couple thousand. It was small enough that I would keep it instead of selling it.
There was an oldman living in the City limits that was running an illegal junk yard when I worked code enforcement. He had about an acre of old cars, appliances and just junk. Almost in every piece of junk he had coffe cans full of coins. He died and we started to clean out the lot and started finding the cache of coins. So, I stopped the clean up and got in touch with his only living relative, a daugter. She and her husband came over and went through the mess and took a pickup truck load of 5 lb. coffee cans full of coins, some old and some new. The ones I saw opened were in no rhyme or reason, just tossed in the cans by the handsful, all loose change and bills rolled up with rubber bands. The daughter never would say how much she recovered or what all she found but she told me they would never have to work again. Last I heard IRS was looking for them and they had moved with no forwarding address. I'm still not sure the daughter got it all as she didn't ever go back when the lot was cleaned up to check for anything that might have been buried. The City finally foreclosed on the property for unpaid liens and now it sits in the middle of a large flood control lake. I wish I'd known then what I know now, but you know what they say about hindsight.
At any rate, your granfather's cache is one of the biggest I have ever seen and I am humbled by it. It isn't the find of the year by any means, it is the find of a lifetime! Monty

your honor at treating the gramps rightly will and has been rewarded !! --- some folks tend to be greedy sucks --stealing and looting from old folks --- its a shame really that folks are like that --- your kindness has been justly rewarded -- it warms my heart to see "good" things happening for the old guy who must have spent much time and effort to get such a collection "together" for a change rather than ---"gee I found a truck load of silver coins while CRHing at the local bank today" ---(often those "massive CRH silver strikes happen because someone was looting and cashing in gramps money for "paper money" or "gramps" passes away and folks just "cash in" his collection with not any regard to its "real value" in the "mad dash for cash" that happens when folks die and people "rummage" thru their former belongings --- Ivan

My grandpa had a stash like that. The widow took em all and sold em before he passed. I got away with his MD treasure chest which held a few large cents and some smaller silver dug coins. If she only knew that the chest was more valuable to him than the rest of it. The other stuff was just money to him. The chest was his keepers. Dumb witch.

you need to do the 'ol boy SOLID get the more vaued ones graded and slabed(sent away pcgs) then sell them and give him all the dough then you 3 sit around and make a pizza That...is a great plan! The pizza will be worth a million times the value you get from the coin! |

Amazing find right in Grandpa's cellar, congrats!! And a big for having the integrity to do the right thing with it. Just think, you've got the rest of the cellar to look through too!! I bet there's lots more treasure to find!! |

That sure is one heck of a treasure but the real treasure is that Grandfather. Just by the way he collected, he seems to be a very intelligent fellow. He is the real treasure and you should try to spend as much time with him as possible. Just imagine the stories he could tell.

When they started pulling the silver coins out of circulation, to be replaced by clad, my dad started saving (hoarding) the silver. He eventually collected together about $225 of it, and I had saved up $75 of it. We went on a vacation, so we put all our silver together in an old metal suitcase, and we buried it in the back yard next to the old power pole there, for safekeeping.
We came back, and later I mentioned to dad that we had buried our silver coins. He had forgotten them, so I showed him where we had buried them, and we dug them up. He later sold our collections to his brother at face value, who owned a coin shop at that time, in another part of the state. Dad was being a nice guy.
But years later, I spoke to dad of those coins we had collected and buried. But like before, he had forgotten that we had buried them when we went on vacation together. He did not remember that at all, years later.
With a lot of people, they will forget that they buried a cache of money. That's why so many caches are still buried, waiting for an enterprising MD'er to come along and find it!

Grandpa did very well with he auctions, He kept the two gold pieces and some of the other coins but since its been so long I cant remember what he ended up getting.I think he gave us 10% and we were thrilled. I Dont have a detector right now as mine both broke but im looking to get an Ace 250 before the spring. Thanks for all the great compliments
