Hey everyone,

Had some time today to go out and do some looking around. As I mentioned a few days ago in a prior post. I said a friend of mine told me he saw a foundation while out hunting about a week ago.

I went last night to a function to donate some new toys to kids that are in need of them for Christmas. My sister happened to show up with her boy friend. He is the one who told me of the foundation.

They also donated gifts. We got to sitting down and talking and I brought it up to him. He gave me directions to where the site was located. I knew exactly where he was talking about.

I also saw my brother Lance, there and asked him if he wanted to come stay a weekend and do some hunting. I told him we were gonna go and try and find the foundation that my sisters boy friend told me about.

Well we got up today early hoping to find this location. We get there park walk across the street and follow a old dirt rd into the woods. It looked like a nice area at first glance.

There was a large open field with some old large tree's all spaced out. Looked like something may have sat in the area at one point. But we were to eager to get down into the woods and see if we could find the location of this foundation.

Well after about 15 minutes into the search we find a foundation. We said to ourselves this must be it. It wasn't really old but old enough for treasure. I was hoping for a colonial area site. But this one had to be late 1800's to early 1900's. I could tell by the style.

It was really silent for the most part. All the sudden while working a old dirt rd in front of the place I get a solid 79 at 4 inches on the dfx. I thought for sure a regular Roosevelt. Numbers were a little low for silver. Dig out the hole swept a little dirt away and saw silver.

I said to myself must be a Rosie or merc. I picked it up and was really happy to see it was a seated. I knew it was in great condition. My first seated this yr. Didn't think I was gonna find one this yr. Lots of barbers but no seateds.

At the time of the dig. I called my brother over to see the coin. I then got side tracked talking with him. I went over to the hole filled it in and made a once in a life time rookie mistake by not rechecking the hole.

We continued and I picked up a 43 D merc on the rd also. Wasn't finding really any other metals but silver coins. I then was approaching the hole were the seated dime was found. I got a fairly solid signal right next to were the dime was dug. I pinpoint and look down on the surface and pick up a tiny I mean tiny coin. I said what is this.

Another 3 center maybe. No it was a 1880 H mint mark Canadian 5 cent piece. A first for me. Really small and thin coins. Things continued to be slow so we headed back to the rd were the field and huge old trees were.

We saw some divets like a home was once on the property at one point. After further investigations we found old stone walls and some remains of old foundations off in the brush.

Only bad part was alot of the soil wasn't natural. We hit it anyways and after about 20 minutes I dug a Indian no date on a old gravel rd about 4 inches deep. Looked like a 1870's date but it's to worn out to tell.

I picked up a few relics here and there. I also found 2 wheat's. I knew we were onto something. All the sudden I go into some brush. I get a nice plus 46 bouncing up to the 50's a little. I dig down about 5 inches and see the glint of gold.

It was wrapped around a root in the ground. Not getting to excited alot of fakes look real at first I pick it up. I said man this is heavy. The dirt instantly fell off the band. When that diamond hit the light I knew I had something big.

I called Lance over and we were in just amazement. It was marked 14k and the stone was very large and clear. I got it home and was able to clean it up. It is one of the nicest diamonds I have been able to handle. The clarity is tremendous. The size is upwards of a carat I would guess.

The ring on a guess I would say weighs around a half ounce. I found a real winner today everyone. I need to have this one looked over. I found a similar ring on line going for 3,000 just like this one. It retailed for over 5,000.

Money isn't the thing for me. I never sell a find. I just can't believe this one got lost. I'm really thinking a hunter lost this one. I hope you all enjoy the pics and story.

I tried my best to get good shots for you all. I am gonna have this one looked over. Never give up out there. You just never know what is gonna come up next.

                                             *Updated*

Today, I got off work early. It was nice. I figured I had nothing to do. So I headed over to this jewler I know. He seems like a decent dude. I've dealt with other one's in the past that weren't so good.

Well he looked over the diamond and here is what he said about it. He said it was a SI 1 quality . I'm not real familar with jewlers terms. He said he couldn't tell the size for sure. He guessed about a half carat. But he said it was probably a little bigger.

He said the way the stone was set down in the ring it was hard for him to tell the exact size. He also on a guess said the clarity was a G. He said it was a really nice diamond. He said I found a real keeper with this one. He also said whoever lost it had a hard day.

He estimated the ring to be about 40 to 50 yrs old. He said he could tell by the type of machine that cut the stone. I also told him it was 4 inches deep. He also said the band was a style from that period.

Now for what he said he would list something like this in his store. He told me the ring was worth atleast 2,300. He said it's probably a little bigger and probably worth a little more than that.

He also tested out some of my other rings to confirm carats and stone quality of some other rings I brought to him. I got a new watch battery also while there.

He never charged me for looking over any of the rings. He seems to be a genuine jewler. He doesn't treat me like I stole this ring from my Dad or something.

It was a great find for sure. Nice to hit that real big one. I hunt alot and hard so I feal it was well worth the wait. Hope you all like the added info on it.

HH Jer

Updated: Had the stone taken out of the setting and precicely measured and weighed. It is a 3/4 carat not a half. My wife really liked the setting I found in the past. So I decided to have it set in it. Then appraised at 6500. My wife really loves the ring. She gets alot of compliments on it.

I thought I would share a few pics while the wife had it off her hand. Hope to find another out there some day.

Thanks for looking,

Jeremy

Thanks alot for all the replies everyone.

The ring is slightly big on my finger. I would definetly wear this one. I've found alot of nice rings but this one tops them all. The beach is one place to get a diamond ring.

But in the woods is another story. So many bullet casings and other low conducting signals around. I'm glad I'm a dig everything type of hunter.

I know better by now. I hate to miss anything. The seated dime is in Au condition. Must have been dropped that yr. It was really nice to get it.

You all are right about the karma. Give and you shall be rewarded. I really beleive in that. It seems like the more I help the more my luck builds.

I enjoy helping others in whatever I can do for them. Always good to keep your mouth open about the hobby. It has lead me to some great locations.

I polished the ring out some more. I'm gonna attach a few more pics. It's tough with a scanner. I can't get a pic right to serve this one justice. It has so much more life to it than the pics show.

Thanks again Tnet for making it one of your best recent finds. It's nice to be noticed for all the hard work put into the hobby.

HH Jer

Jer, I remember reading a certain post about a certain trip down south and a certain speeding ticket. Funny how things change. It had to have been the THing Gods looking down and saying, hey, Jer, check that hole again!!! You just paid for that ticket and vacation in one SWEET sweep!!! CONGRATS!!! Get it resized for you and get the seated sealed.

Thanks alot for all the great replies everyone.

I still am sitting down looking at this thing. It really hits you hard when your not expecting it. I didn't do a dance out in the field. Not even a shout.

My brother who is younger was hunting with me and having a tough day. This one would have killed any partner. So out of love and the way things should be I acted like it was just another day.

I've gotten really accustomed to going out and finding great things. I've been doing it steady now for yrs. I've got a good grasp on this hobby. I think I have more than a slight edge on other users out there also.

I know my unit super well and can teach anyone to be great with a detector also. Not bragging just stating facts. I'm not the best treasure hunter in the world.

Sorry about the philosophy there for a minute. Now back to the ring. Unfortunately the ring doesn't fit. I wear a 8 in a wedding band I think.

This is about a 10 or 11. I looked at the stone under a high powered loop. It has no flaws at all. I'm not a expert on diamonds. But a jewler told me once a few tips about them and I remembered what he said.

The area I was hunting was a rich area. Just developed wooded lands in the past 15 yrs or so. Alot of 1700's history in the neighborhood. Long gone cabins and such. Homes were like 200,000 and up to probably 500,000.

This one must have been lost in the past 20 yrs I'm thinking. There were some big house about 100yards away across the street. You walked right over and could hunt still today in these woods.

It must have been a awful day when whoever lost it. May have fell into the snow while taking a glove off. Then it's gone unless you got a detector.

If I had a ring that rich on I'd a bought one and found it. I'll get back to that area again sometime. Now I gotta work Saturdays for the next few weeks at least.

Thanks again everyone

A friend of mine used to laugh at my silly little hobby until one day he lost his $2800.00 wedding ring in someone's yard.

He called me for help and I found it in 5 minutes with my detector.

Needless to say. He doesn't think the hobby is silly anymore.

Let us know if you get the ring appraised. That one looks expensive!  ;)

I'm gonna get it resized polished out and looked over. I won't wear it as a every dayer. I'm hard on my hands at work. So I like to wear a large 6mm heavy wedding band. I can beat that one up and not worry about it.

Thanks alot everyone.

Yes persitence is a big key Bob. I;m sure you know that already. Your a hunting machine yourself. You never know what's gonna come up next.

I don't know if I can top this one everyone. But I'm younge so I got alot of good treasure hunting yrs ahead of me. I'll post back with a size and quality and value on this piece once I get it to a jewlers.

Works got my time all tied up right now. It's crazy around the holidays. It will slow down after the new yr. Then it will be about to cold to hunt.

I say this every year and still find myself out in Jan and Feb. I just can't seem to stay in for more than a few weeks. This hobby is like a good drug. Can't get enough of it.

Helluva day.  I am glad you took those silver coins home before trying to "field-clean" them.  That could've been tragic for that GREAT seated dime.  Such a nice coin.  Plus, I love the before & after pics.

Thank you for a great post!

Thanks alot everyone.

I've found some nice coins in my time. Even have found alot of nice relics. But this one was my biggest find yet. I've found coins worth 500.00. I've found relics in the hundreds.

But never broke into the thousands category in this hobby. It's a great fealing to find something this awesome. I still hope to turn up that gold coin one day.

I never clean a find in the field. Alot of people do. I have patience. I threw that diamond ring in my ciggarette pack and kept on hunting. I've made so many good finds in the past that I am used to it. I expect to come home with good stuff.

The wife would like to get into detecting. She wants a top end unit. With our kids being so younge we can't go together yet. But one day we will.

I always recheck the hole. This was a once in a lifetime mistake. Like I said before. I got side tracked by talking with my brother and totally forgot to check the hole.

Thanks again everyone for making this topic so popular.

Thanks alot Joe.

I've been so busy working lately. I haven't been able to hunt at all in the last few weeks. Weather here has been in the low 60's to.

Oh well I guess. Atleast I found the Diamond to end the year. It was like this one will hold you up for a little while. It's like my detector knew I wasn't gonna be out again for awhile and gave me this great ring. I doubt it but it's funny how things work.

Jeremy,

Love the ring and the story.  I'm thrilled to see you got such a good find.  I always enjoy your posts.

I'd also like to get hunting with my wife.  She's interested but we only have one detector now.

I am still looking for a gold ring... a diamond ring would be even better!

Thanks alot Bjorn.

I try to tell my stories step by step to bring the reader as close as possible. It was a day to remeber. I think I could get the wife into detecting if we had the time to go together.

Someone always has to watch the kids. I think later in life we'll hunt together. Once the kids are grown and out of the house. But for now I'll try to find 2 hunters worth a yr lol.

That first gold ring can really be a pain to find. It was hard for me to find my first also. It will come. Try and expand your digging zone. Dig alot of tabls and foil if you can.

It will come and when it does hopefully it will be a big one. I still remeber my first gold ring. It was a large one to. It was worth the wait. I'm sure it will be for you to.

I also wanted to thank Tnet for putting this post into the best of tresurenet. This is a great site. And I will always post on it. The people and moderators are really great on here.

Take care all,

This post got me to thinking.  I know that's dangerous.  Anyway I found a silver ring last year with a big stone in it and posted it on the forum.  several people told me they thought it wasn't a real diamond because it was in a silver set.  I just put it away in the top of my closet and didn't think anything else about it.  I had a friend look at it who is knowledgible about stones and he said he thinks it is a real diamond because of the way it is set in the ring. I'm going to have it checked this afternoon and find out for sure.  Monty

Hope it turns out to be a real winner Monty. You'd think some where out there that the silver lovers of the world. Would have a genuine diamond set in silver.

Could the ring be white gold. Or is it marked sterling or 925. You just never know what your gonna find out there. That's what makes it so much fun.

I never dreamed of a ring this nice being where I found it. It shows that just about anything can get lost any where.

Well, I didn't make it to the jewelry store yesterday.  I slipped it on my finger (snug fit) and when I  got home I couldn't get it off!  My finger swelled up and I thought I was going to have to amputate, but with a little liquid soap and a lot of screaming, and a smidgen of foul language (I'm so ashamed, hanging my head with a hangdog look), and pulling it finally came off.  Now I remember why I don't wear rings!  Maybe today?  Monty

AWESOME FIND JerDFX!
Thats a dang nice ring!
Congrats!

Have fun,
Salvager

P.S. Monty,
Just cos it's silver doesn't mean it's not a diamond!
Lots of girls prefer to  wear silver (like my girlfriend Grin ) and jewlery shops are eager to sell diamonds to them too (or their significant other)!
So you still have a dang good chance of it being real! Goodluck! The setting is usually the key from what I have heard/seen.

Thanks alot guys.

That sure is a nice looking ring Monty. I thought the same thing. So many women prefer silver over gold. I was wondering myself are they now putting real diamonds into silver.

Sorry to hear about the ring stuck on the finger. I have had it happen before also. Not a fun thing. You start worrying when that puppy won't come off.

I don't mind your post on mine. Your a friend right. Hope you get it looked over at some point.

Thanks alot SilverDreams.

It was a heck of a ring to find. Hit me when I least expected it. Most of the big finds usually do. It's amazing what gets lost out there.

It still strikes me when I'm pulling out the detecting jewelry box and I see that stone glimmering. Don't look at it all the time. But when I do I say to myself man that's a nice diamond. Looks alot better in real life.

Hoping I can make a really big find out there some day. Say 100,000 or more would be nice.

Nice Going!  Beautiful "D"!   One Question, tho?  Are you sure that beat up "Nickel" is really a Nickel?  I have a feeling its a Dime! Could be wrong tho!

Thanks alot guys and gals for the replies.

Wish my wife wore silver lol. I'd have alot more money on hand. That first ring will come LGirl. When it does it will really hit you hard.

I'm sure it's a nickle busc. It looks just like a canadian dime does. But it is way smaller. And it also says 5 cents faintly on the back. I thought it was a dime also. Didn't know they were making silver nickles at those times.

Man I am bugging to get out. I almost went out today in the cold and rain. I've just been researching alot so i have some new locations to check out. Gonna get out here real soon though.

Snow is almost melted now. Probably this weekend I can get out. It's going on close to a month now and cabin fever is starting to set in.

Hope I can top this find this yr with a new one. It's gonna be hard but I have faith it can be done. If you search hard enough your gonna find valuables. I'm waiting to make that really big find out there some day.

Thanks again,

Jeremy

Hey everyone,

Wanted to pass along some more photos of a transformation I had done for my wife with the stone out of this ring. I had a antique setting that I found that looked like it would hold the stone from this man's ring. I took it to my jewler to see if it could be done.

Well it was done about 250.00 later. But I was able to get accurate apprasial and size and clarity of the stone. My wife really loves the ring. I hope to find another out there at some point. Hope you all like the new transformation. My wife has been getting a ton of compliments on the ring.

Thanks for looking

Thanks guys,

Yes, she really likes the ring. Her other one went to the jewlery box and never came back out again. She gets compliments all the time on the ring. She wears it everyday as a new wedding ring.

It was a real thrill to have found this ring. Then to transform it later for a present for my wife was even better.

Thanks alot guys.

Yes, It was a day to remember. It's the most expensive find I ever dug. I see it every day now on my wife's finger. She loves the ring since it's been transformed. Hope to make another great find like this one day. They are out there. It was another typical tab signal. When the light hit the stone I knew I had something special.

No problem man

I still look at it on my wife's hand and say man that is a heck of a stone. I turned it into a one of a kind ring.

Thanks

Thanks alot Kelly,

This one has been on here for a good 3 yrs probably. The other one right under this one was just added a few weeks ago. This is still the biggest find for me with a detector value wise. Hope to find another out there one day. A gold coin would be nice to.

Thanks Kelly,

And everyone else. Wish I was out hunting right now and finding good stuff. Just way to hot and dry here this time of yr. My second youngest boy got bit by a tick a few weeks back. He got the typical bullesye that indicates lymes disease. The ticks are really bad here this yr. Him getting bit was the first confirmed case in my co in the last 2 yrs.

So I need to really watch this yr in the woods. That is really the only place I hunt. It is just to bad this time of yr. I'll be back soon though.

Take care guys

Jeremy
