This is my very first post on this forum. These were recovered earlier this year from a wooded hillside in NJ. Didn't even know what they were until someone in another forum was able to id them. 4 early large cents(1798-1803) recovered on the same hill. All eagle and star. Probably my all time best finds.

Thanks for the comments on the buttons. They were found within 20 feet of each other from 2 to about 6 inches deep. Below are pictures of the large cents found there and nearby and the reverse of one of the buttons(no backmark)Only 2 of the buttons had shanks but after 200 years in the ground,I guess that's not too bad. The third picture is of other buttons found there. One button (not shown) has a london gilt backmark(interesting). Thanks for looking.MM2

Big time Kudos again MM. The best find I can recall seeing in a long time anywhere on the net. I would think that they would be worth more as a collection than parting them out. Make sure you have that place picked clean before you reveal its location. WAY TO GO!!!

Great finds. I am not surprised that you found multiple GW buttons. The were not everyday wear. The were often worn on a cape by inserting them through the fabric then running a ribbon of cloth through all of them, then tying a knot in each end of the cloth ribbon. If the ribbon broke often all of the bottons came off. Resulting in a multiple loss if not found immediately. An attempted robbery would would explain all if the items were fairly close. Ah! history! Don,t you love it. ;)

Just an update. The buttons were inspected by an expert in New York and are certified genuine. She told me that they were not worth as much as an un-dug example(understandably)but she said that many people she contacted to help determine the value wanted to know more details about where and how they were found. She did not tell me over the phone the value but said the paperwork should be here soon. I'll let everyone know as soon as I know. Below are a few more coins recovered from the area (another 1798 large cent, 1816 large cent, a 1809 half-cent found on site and a 180? large cent with a hole thru it found nearby,I posted that one earlier. That's all for now.MM2

Ok, the appraisal arrived today. They are appraised as follows. The 2 bottom buttons were valued at 500$-700$ each because of the broken shanks. The top right button (63 indentations-intact shank) appraised at 1000$-2000$.And the top left(49 indentations-intact shank) was appraised at 1500$-2200$. Appraised total of 3,500$-$5,600$! What do you think.Candidate for Western+Eastern? I am one very happy camper today!

Not a dumb question at all Mona Lisa.On the outer edge of the button, the total number of dots(I can't think of another word) that circle the button.3 of the buttons have 63 of those dots and are more common and one has 49 which is scarce. The appraiser had more difficulty finding a price for that one.

Thanks everyone. The area of the grove was about 40 ft wide by 20 ft deep on the side of a hill. There were no special features to set it apart from anything else in the woods.Directly in front is an opening in a stone wall.

Great finds and great appraisals. You should get on Antiques Roadshow next time they are in your area!! What a fascinating bit (4 bits, plus the coins, LOL) of American history. Finding even one of those buttons would have made me ecstatic, but to find 4 of them in a small area is phenomenal. I tip my hat to you, and to GW -- our greatest president.

Way to go MM2. I hunt Western NJ also, Huntrdon County. Found a pair of NJ coppers but, never any buttons. I keep threating to move to Florida, but, the hunting is pretty good in this area. We should get together sometime for coffee or a beer and swap some stories. Also, Im trying to get some guys together to do a hunt in the Battle of Bound Brook area. I grew up around there and used to go to a swimming hole in the area, interested, shoot me an Email. Zootman

I wanted to follow this up with some pictures of the area. These were taken last fall.In the first picture, the grove is just up ahead on the right, the fifth shows what used to be a much larger pond.In the third and fourth picture, the grove is just ahead on the left, this is the trail I was following when I stumbled upon it.The first plain button was found on the trail near the evergreen directly in front in the fourth picture. The first GW was recovered near the same tree.

Mountainman, first of all congratulations on these amazing finds. And second, I have to back up the comment made by tabfinder...don't tell anyone where this spot is! My first thought in regards to people being curious about them was, "restrictions...historical society...bloodsucking leeches..." Don't let it happen, go back and find more stuff!

Mountainman, I just discovered this site and your posting. First off, AWESOME!!! secondly, throw those "appraisals" out the window!! They are useless when evaluating something of such historic significance. Such appraisals are particularly meaningless to real historians who's interest is provenance rather than the "condition" and "grading" used by stamp and coin collectors. It looks like you have a real shot at proving some provenance! Remember that you have clearly found a "set" which is in itself rare, and the in this case the "whole" is of far greater value than the "sum of the parts".
Your buttons were not randomly lost as most dug finds were, but instead were no doubt the remains of all that's left of a coat which was lost or forgotten, and subsequently dragged about. By researching the land records it is very possible you may find a link with a dignitary or politician who may have worn that coat.
Having found one of the rarer varieties of the inaugural button myself (across the river from you) I did the same thing I suggest to you; find who owned the land, study the route to New York, review battles or engagements that might have taken place nearbye (and which may have been revisited after the war), and put a picture together of what might have happened.
In my case the "laurel wreath" button was suggested to have been worn by General Monroe, the In where I found it was within eyesight of one of his engagements; it was an area where he re couperated; and it was on route to (or from) N.Y.. The button has provenance beyond value as a generic object, just as your set already has far more value as a set, and perhaps much more when you put two and two and together.
You've made the find of a lifetime, and in a stomping ground dear to my heart, and where the humblest appearing locations are steeped in history. Congratulations! and good luck linking even more provenance to this astounding find!

Great nice to see history preserved. You said there was a pond that was larger at some point. This maybe why they camped here? I can think of several reason why the coat was left or not retrieved. I think a good search of that water area will produce more finds. steve
