This thread is for coins you find in, on, under, or around coin handling machines such as CoinStar, Coinmaster, auto-sorting machines in banks, payphones, and vending machines.  Please add your story!)

At the supermarket again.  Habitually stopped by the Coinstar machine, and stooped to pick up a dime on the floor.  That's when I noticed that the reject tray was full of dimes.  Visions of silver dimes filled my head!  I looked around to see if someone had just walked away from the machine, but there was no sign that anyone had been using it in the last few minutes, so I scooped away.

Well, no silver, just:
20 dimes (1970-2002)
4 nickels (1984-1996)
1 Canadian dime (1982)
----------------------------
US$2.20 + CAN$0.10

The first Canadian non-penny I've seen in the wild in years.  Meh, $2.20 for free... I can't complain.  I hope no one else is complaining that their dimes disappeared.

EDIT: As your responses so quickly pointed out, that "10" should have been a "20".  I blame the error on that bugged Canuck dime planting subliminal messages in my head.

RECENT FINDS:
2006-D half
2005 Belize 1 cent
2006 Ethiopian 5 santim
1941 nickel
1971 Cameroon 100 francs
1986 French 20 centimes
2005 Irish 1 eurocent
2009 South Korean 10 won
1952 dime
1964-D dime
1948 nickel
12 wheat cents
6 Canada cents
2006 Bahamas cent
I wunt tha gold. Wher tha Gold at?

How much are dimes worth where you are? Because here they are 10 cents.... Looks like you found $1.20 plus the Canadian dime.

I noticed the same thing.  Must be the lightheadedness that often accompanies upward surges in the price of silver.

Haha, could be. My guess is that they meant to type 20 dimes instead of 10. Smiley

Around here they're in just about every super market.  The reject tray is obvious; a big gaping cavity on the front.  Why do people leave stuff there.  Well who knows.  Lazy, didn't hear them drop, didn't care, forgot.  If i'm at the store and see someone using the machines, I'll lurk until they finish and leave then I'll check.  If they have a kid with them forget it.  Their head is right at the rejects and they see them drop.  Will scoop them out every time.

Little kids check the reject tray all the time. If their mom is in line, a lot of time they bee line for the coinstar to check the tray. Ive seen it happen many times. The best Ive found is a mercury dime. Yet, I lost it when I moved. Oh well, maybe itll show up.

whats the deal with these coinstart machines?  where do you find them and where are the reject trays?  and why would people leave them there!?

When I lived in Florida they were always at the Kash and Karry stores, and there was always stuff in the reject trays. This was long before I joined here, and I wish I would have kept track of all of my finds from them. I did find a sweet Mercury dime in one just before we moved. I was in one of those stores about 2-3 times per week, which was in a distressed area and the machine would get used quite a bit.
I worked in the apartment bizness, and we would find a lot of change in the apartments when people would skip out in a hurry. We'd save it up, and once every week or two I'd go dump it and it would pay to buy lunch for my staff. We had an influx of Kuwaiti's in the 90's, and for some reason they didn't like change at all, they considered it trash. In one apartment alone, I picked up about $140.00 in change, not including pennies. Back then, silver was not going for squat, I wish I would have saved all the silver jewelry I picked up and pawned for next to nothing.  Tongue

I LOVE these CoinStar stories!  I regularly check the reject trays myself.  So far, nothing super cool to report, but free money is free money!

Moderators: how about a forum for CoinStar or simply "found on the ground", or what I like to call..."ground-score"!

I found a 1968 penny underneath the Coinstar at Kroger's last night. Wahooooo!!! The rarest penny of them all! hahaha.

Reply To This Topic #16 Posted Jul 10, 2007, 05:00:29 AM
Is this thread only for Coinstar finds?  If so, I have no stories.  But if you all will indulge me a story about a coin return on a pay phone, well then I have a story to tell.

Once upon a time, when I was a starving teller for a local bank, I went to use a pay phone so I could call a rival bank and inquire about a job opening.  So I go to the pay phone and scrounge around in my purse for a dime (this was a looooonnnnnggggg time ago, when a local call was just a dime).  After making my call and learning that the pay was lower at the rival bank than at my current place of employment, I opened the booth door (phone booths had doors in those days) and turned to walk back to work because my lunch break was about over.  As I turned away, something or someone told me to check the coin return (something I used to always do as a young girl).  Maybe it was a childhood habit that caused me to check the tray, or maybe it was my guardian angel, or greed -- but I did and was rewarded.  There, much to my pleasant surprise, was an entire coin return tray filled with coins.  I can only guess that somebody attempted to make a long distance call, got no response on the other end, and left before hearing the sweet jingle of coins dropping into the tray.  His/her loss was my gain.  If memory serves, I got over $2.00 that day from the coin return.  In those days, 2 dollars would buy a couple gallons of gas.

The 40% halves (1965 to 1970) can be sold for between $1.60 and $1.90 (ideal), depending on who's buying.

    United States, 1 cent (1943-P)
    Canada, 10 cents (1968, 1988)
    Canada, 25 cents (1975, 2003-P)

    Germany, 5 pfennig (1973)
    Great Britain, 1 penny (1996)

(That '68 dime is nickel, not silver.)  These go along well with my roll finds of the day: 1953-P cent, 1957-P cent, 1948-P nickel, 1969-D half

A good day.  All the day's finds are pictured...

What has frustrated me is that I have used Coinstar before and I could see a gold necklace clasp under the perforated metal tray that you lift up, but I couldn't get it.  Another time I saw a small silver ear ring in the same spot.

9 coins in coin return, star of the show, 1943 S War Penny w/pic

While they were changing bags at the bank coin machine, a coin fell out of the slide for the rejects at my feet. The teller looked in and said, there are a bunch stuck in there. She said I could have them. As I sorted, I found a 1943 s war penny. Woo Hoo. That is one I will never find MDing because I discriminate out steel. The rest were various foreign coins and one clad Rosie.

I went to my dump bank today and when I turned the coin counter on there was something rolling around in there and before I could add a handfull of halves went plunk into the reject tray.  1942S wheatie.  When I opened that account the lady was showing me around the machine and I dumped a coffee can full of pennies and nickels- she dipped into the reject and pulls out some coin and tosses it in and I noticed a dime- well it wound up in the reject again  and she said older coins seem to get rejected.  As was that silver dime haha.

I found 2 clad quarters on the floor next to the machine.
Both coins were tails up so I picked them up and left
them on the machine. If I see a coin on the ground heads up,
it means good luck and you can take it. If its tails then it
means bad luck if you take it.

    Finds so far:
    2- Barbers '09,09s
    105- Walkers
    148- Franklins
    26 - 90%  JFKs
    800 - 40%  JFKs
    11- Silver proofs
    1-1925 Stone Mtn. Com
    1-1936 Long Island Tercenntenial
    12-1987Ds &Ps
    5-commemoratives
    119-proofs
    62-Ikes

Playing the vending machine slots yielded 2 old nickels, a 1948-P and a 1949-P (which filled a folder hole).  Also got a crazy-shiny 1965, as well.  Maybe it's a Special Mint Set escapee.

Someone left a handful of change in the CoinMaster reject tray:

    17 pennies (1920, 1940-S, 1941, 1970-2007)
    8 nickels (1990-2006)
    2 dimes (1960-D, 1964)
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    $0.77

2 silver dimes and 3 wheats... fine by me!

i can remember a car wash token, canadians, 2 silver dimes, and $2 in coins covered with some sticky grease. Don't you just hate it when you see a guy just about to leave and then the little reminder comes up and he takes all the coins (some that you can see are foreign and halfs and stuff) and shoves if in his pocket and runs off. Or when they keep putting the coins in without looking until the machine takes them (oh how is wish i could clean out those machines)

I agree that the return machines are a decent source. Especially since I am there anyway. A number of times I have found a couple bucks in the return. A few times been allowed to keep whats in the silver tray from the inside. This included the Sacagawea coin some pesos and a few extra coins. Some of my better finds have been a steel penny. It was not in the return but stuck between the side and the roof of the machine. I found $8 in quarters one time in the return slot including one silver. I found a mercury dime one time just sitting on the machine next to the tray.  I have found cups and bags of money that I guess the machine would not take, usually a few dollars. I have gotten some wheaties and foreign coins out of the garbage can next to the machine. Probally my best finds were from people returning coins in front of me. They had a big pile of coins on the coffie table next to the machine, the machine would not take them. Some were pretty old. I told them to take them to the coin shop. I even offered them $5 for them. They said NO. I could have them for FREE. I said ok. There were a number of foriegn coins from the mid 19th century. I cannot remember if I had gotten any silver. The one interesting coin was a 1869 2 cent US. It was in poor shape. Still a good find. The whole lot of coins were probably not worth more than $5, but I still think  it was a good find.

i actually have a really good coin machine story.  i was in the process of moving and decided to cash in my change (my bank has a coin counter).  i didnt check the reject tray first so half way through i pulled a handfull out of the tray and dumped it in the pile. as i was pushing it through the machine i noticed a bucnh of wheat pennies and a silver quarter.   at first i was nervous thinking some of my collection ended up in my junk change.  only after i took the finds home and checked my coin folders did i realize they were not from my collection but that someone left them in the tray.  oldest wheat was 1910.  that was a wonderful day.  i think it was 6 wheat pennies in total.

While dumping some halves at one of my usual banks today, the coin machine bag filled (the entire bag was my rejects).  While changing the bag out, they let me check the reject bucket  inside the machine.  Today was a very strange find; an entire roll of pennies...in its wrapper.   Not sure how someone would dump that in, not notice it and it would fit and get kicked into the reject bucket; but it appeared to have.

The bank lets me keep whatever I find in there, as I do dump out any trash that's in there  Cool, so I picked up a quick fifty cents, and although none were wheats; eight were pre-'83.

The manager also had an '02 German 2 euro coin she was saving for me.

    Nice begets nice.

Well, things are a bit different here, as there are no change counting machines, but I did find 400yen in a vending machine.  These machines are EVERYWHERE.  Seriously, about 4 or 5 to a block.  I check em when I am near em.

    400yen(4x100yen)=3.60 or so US

They don't use bills smaller than 1000yen here, so the machines all take em, give back change.

I was dumping about $80 in nickels and pennies today at the bank and found a Canadian penny (2006 RCM) that didn't slide into the counter opening. Then I found out why - the metal that makes up the opening appears to be magnetic and the penny stuck to it real hard. Never noticed that before...

While dumping rejects (and picking up new boxes) at one bank, their reject bucket (on the inside) yielded a 76d Ike, three US dimes, three US cents and a twenty peso Mexican coin ('80).

While helping the guy change the bags out (they had to use smaller bags, for the regular size had run out) I cherry picked a '44 US cent ........and a '57d US quarter  !   (need to see if I'm still missing that one or not)

Next, a second bank, after buying my boxes of halves, asked for any foreign coin.   The teller gives me eight Canadian quarters ('74, '76, '80, '84, 86x2 (I didn't have an '86 yet), '93, '03),  a Canadian Nickel ('68), Canadian dime ('00) and a five colone coin from Costa Rica ('89).

      Interesting topic.

First time responder longtime coinroll hunter, since 2006. When I dump my halves at the coin counter at TCF in Michigan I always check the return tray as well as the floor and the trash can next to the machine. I am happy to report that I have collected over $100 in Canadian coins since 2006, as they reject them here in Michigan as well as all forigen coins and it appears silver dimes and wheaties as well since i've snagged a couple of those as well. I recently found a 1935 canadian nickle in the return tray and just last week got got a handfull of coins mostly Canadian but it was around $5 total. I check the trash because most people just toss the Canadian coins and tokens out. I have also found lots of game tokens batting cage tokens and even a old Ceasers palace token.
I call this passive income LOL.
I might add. That I'm not so shure I get 100% of my money back at these machines. When returning $500 SKUNK boxes back it sometimes comes up short. as much as 6 to 8 dollars making that skunk box that much worse. Soooo you win some you lose some.

Just for the record, I called the bank (it's my regular CU) and let them know I found it. That's the last I heard about it.

Yesterday there was a 2005 Danish 1 krone just laying on the CoinStar's ledge, right out in the open.  Guess somebody else didn't know what to do with it.  I sure did!

I went to my CU today to dump some halves.  I placed my halves in the coin tray and pressed the "start" button.  The machine was making a weird sound, so i immediately stopped it.  I looked down into the opening to see what was making the noise.  I saw a roll of cents sticking up in the chute.  I reached into the chute risking finger loss to see what I could find.  Two full paper rolls of cents and a roll of dimes! (one of the rolls had a 1944 & 1946-d wheat in it)  There were also two Canadian quarters and three Canadian dimes on the magnet.   A small bonus for the skunky halves I was dumping.
