I was dumping several one-gallon milk jugs into a Coin Star when I heard a clunk from the reject chute.  I was a live bullet from my .38 Special that got mixed in with the change!  Yikes!

My mother was a moonshiner and I love her still...

I always walk by the Coinstar machine and glance in the reject tray. The store that I frequent has it's Coinstar next to the scratch ticket vending machine. Nothing in the tray, but on the floor in front of the scratch ticket machine I noticed something folded up. Without missing a step I scoop it up and continue to walk on. Outside I unfolded a $20. See, scratch tickets are lucky even if you don't play!

Has any one ever had a store employee question you on why you are taking something out of the machine and walking out of the store?

Just paranoid I guess. My local coinstar had 7 tokens and a dogtag in the brochure holder last week. It took me 3 tries to get everything out. Those tokens make a lot of noise clinking on the plastic brochure holder which is just slightly smaller than my hand. So it is a tight fit.

Was dumping halves today at my credit union.  I reached into the reject bin and pulled out a steel penny and a earring or lapel pin? It's stamped 10k. HH!

humm --seen a diamond stud earring and a silver post type and a live 22 bullet --in the catch pan below the dump tray-- time for a long pair of tweezers or a long 90 degree bent needle nose plier --to clean it out with --after I offer to "remove" the live bullet from the tray -- I bet the manager will have no problem letting me do it

I've been checking Coinstar machines for the past 3 yrs. and have found probably 15 silver Rosie's, one silver quarter, quite a few wheaties, foreign coins, and of course clad.

A few of you have mentioned finding coins on the magnet of some machines.  I was unaware the machines had a magnet to catch rejects.  Is the magnet accessible without the machine being opened?

    Thanks!

The "magnet" that I check is not for CoinStar, but in the coin sorting machine at my dump bank's lobby.

From said magnet, on April 26th:

    Canada, 10 cents (1998)
    France, 2 eurocents (2004)
    France, 5 eurocents (1999)
    Mexico, 1 peso (2007)
    Mexico, 5 pesos (2002)
    Spain, 2 eurocents (2001)

I went to dump some halves and heard some coins in the machine when I started it. I pulled all these out except the war penny. A teller gave it to me. She found it in a penny roll. 3 of the coins are 1 British pound. 3 British pounds equals $5.87. One of the coins is a 1931 and magnetic. Not a bad score.

Went by to check the Green Machine on the way to an in store dump bank. I saw a girl kept pulling a coin out of the return and put it back in. It kept spitting it back out. I went over and could see it was a silver quarter. I gave her a 50 cent piece for it. 50 cents for a 1964 quarter. Not a bad trade.

My best Coinstar score to date today!! A gal was dumping in a full tub of coins the size of a red vines licorice container. I did my bit of shopping and checked it out afterwards. Jackpot!

     - one wheatie (1945-S)
     - 36 pennies
     - 6 nickels
     - one Merc, also a 1945-S (my first Coinstar silver)
     - 16 dimes
     - 4 quarters
     - 2 Canadian pennies (2006, 2007 RCM)
     - 1 Canadian dime (1995)
     - 2 Germany 5 euro cents (2002-F, 2002-G)

That's $3.37 face value, not counting the silver content or foreigns. Great score!

Last wheat from pocket change - 1956-D (1/3/10)
Last silver from pocket change - 1962-D dime (8/14/09)

I think I posted this a while back but not sure but I found $14.71 sitting in a Coinstar tray one day as I was leaving the grocery store.  I literally had to reach in 3-4 times grabbing a handful of coins each time and tossing them quickly into my purse.  The machine is up front close to the customer service desk (where you turn in the coinstar tickets for redemption) and being the semi good samaritan that I am , did glance over there to see if maybe whoever had left all that change might still be up there redeeming their ticket so I could let them know they left quite a chunk of change behind but there wasn't even a clerk up there.   Finders keepers.  Nothing of great worth but it sure was exciting.

I went by the Green Machine like I always do at the market. I could see a lot of change in the return. It took me four scoops to get it all.
When I got home there was:
    16 cents in pennies
    $1 in nickles
    $2.70 in dimes
    $15.25 in quarters

    Total: $18.95

The down side, no old coins.....LOL
I just wonder how long they had been sitting in there. You snooze you lose.

Went to make a dump today and had to wait for a woman to use the machine. She dumped a bag of coins and it sounded like her car keys went with it. Thumping and grinding. I hoped she hadn't broken this machine too. When she was done, she smiled and took her receipt to the teller. I turned the machine on but before dumping coins in, I checked the reject tray.  $3.45. I assume some if not all of them belonged to the woman. I would have told her, but I figure if she don't know how to use the machine and collect the rejects, she should continue to use the machine.  icon_jokercolor

the key word is MIGHT --- as in a 1000 lb bag of money flying in a plane MIGHT somehow fall from the plane and land at your feet --- MIGHT rates right up there with Could happen * and MAYBE --- AND OF COURSE  you have 0% recource against said seller --since he did not say you will find ----- he said you might find (which also means you might not find) ie no promises  ----  but  go get $30 worth of pennies at a bank and look thru them --you MIGHT FIND indain head cents and wheat cents --and steel cents --cost a mere 1 cent replacement cost per find -- no finds rerol and mark the rolls cash em back in  cost $0 -- you can do nickles -- dimes --quarters ect its called Coin Roll Hunting --or CRH for short.

I find coins all of the time in these machines.  Since we are keeping track, I will start keeping track and reporting.  I am confused about this "magnet" thing.  Is there a magnet readily accessable on Coinstar machines or is it inside?
And... how do you get a look in the reject bucket on the inside?

    Thanks in advance

Every time I fill a bag, the teller has to remove it and put new one in. While she has the machine open, you can see the inside reject tray. I always ask to empty the contents. Mostly get beat up pennies and dimes, dirt and candy wrappers, a couple pins, screws, paper clips etc. One machine rejected $20 of my coins into it. I'm glad I got those back. I hate to hear one or more of my coins hitting that reject tray, especially if I don't fill the bag and get a look at what the machine is stealing from me. But on the bright side, I almost always find coins in, or under the machine.

I checked the reject tray in a Coinstar machine today and got a surprise! There was a handful of change! I scooped it out and got 2 quarters, 2 dimes, 1 nickle, 24 zinc pennies and 8 copper pennies! $1.07 in change. There was no silver except 1 of the dimes which was a 1915 Barber dime! Someone had drilled a hole in it but I still thought it was a pretty neat find!  Cool

My first silver find at the Coinstar.
Congrats on your first free silver. Also congrats to Mark on the 'Heroes of Desert Storm 1991" $5 coin. Beats the heck out of my .22 cents yesterday.

    Canada, 1 cent (2004-P, 2007-RCM)
    Canada, 5 cents (2003-P)

    Canada, 25 cents (2006-RCM)
    Belgium, 5 eurocents (2003)
    France, 1 eurocent (2004)
    Germany, 2 eurocents (2002-D, 2002-G)
    Germany, 5 eurocents (2002-F)
    Great Britain, 1 penny (1988)
    Italy, 1 eurocent (2002)
    Italy, 2 eurocents (2002)
    Netherlands, 25 cents (1963)

Every now and then, I cycle nickels through a vending machine at work, and infrequently I find an old Jeff.  Normally I don't post my finds from this method as they are unspectacular nickels such as the 1940-P.  But yesterday I got a 1955-P nickel, and any nickel with a mintage of less than 8 million is worth writing TNet about.
