Here's a CoinStar tactic I've taken to doing.

When you step up to the machine, most of us just check the reject tray and keep walking.  But lately, I've been running the machine.  You don't need to put any of your own money into it.  Simply press the green button, follow the on-screen prompts, and see what happens.  Odds are there will be some loose change in the sorting drum still kicking around from the machine's last user.  Any residual coins in the machine that finish processing through will be credited to you.  Even with the 9% fee, it's still free money.

I've done this a few times, and already racked up over $4.50 in "winnings".  Plus I get to keep whatever falls into the reject tray.  Last time it gave me some beat-up dimes and a 2005 Trinidad & Tobago cent.

a couple of weeks ago i went to one of my dump banks to cash in some junkiron dimes.  didn't even think to check the reject tray (which i usually do before i start dumping).  after a few minutes of dumping i reached down to check the reject tray and found a couple of dimes in there.  i scooped them out and tossed them onto the coin counter tray and almost tipped it to slide them in when i spied a merc sitting right on top.  hmmmm...wait a minute.  did i overlook that in my search or did someone else leave that in there? 

needless to say i scooped it out of the coin counter and quickly pocketed it.  and i'm telling myself that somebody else left in the machine!  LMAO!!!

Hi Everyone,  I'm new, but have been reading the wonderful posts before signing up. Today after work I stopped in one of the stores that has a Coin-star machine, this is the 3rd time I checked one of the machines.  Last week I found a Canadian penny, is also one I needed to fill a hole in the album  . And today I find 3 clad dimes in the reject slot, a 1986-D, 1998-P and a 2008-P.  Not bad for a beginner. 

I used "the claw" (a spring loaded nut pick up tool ) to reach down thru the holes in the money chute to the junk pan below -- and extracted a nice gold ball post earring for my efforts 

I found a 14k gold ring in the penny arcade coin machine last week. the machine was making noise after my coins were done and the teller opened it up and I saw a ring jammed in there. He took it out and handed it to me.

Checked the coinstar reject bin at the grocery store this week and found a handful.

no coin star stories here (yet) but when I was about 5 years old (about 13 years ago) My folks took me to the library, I was always checking return trays on payphones and the like, well there was a big copy machine up on the second floor and I sit there and watched this guy stick a $5 bill into the copy machine, he ran off about 20 copies of his paper and left (copies were 5 or 10 cents each) I crept over there and jammed on the button next to the coin return and the dead silence of the library errupted into the jingling of change pouring out of the return like niagra falls, about 20 heads turned my way but I was too busy stuffing my pockets with my free change to care, I grinned from ear to ear the rest of the night. Funny how you rember little things like that isnt it?

bet he thought it was a $1 instead iof a $5 --20 copies at .05 each = $1 --- nice $4 score for being alert.

Today I went to the supermarket, at the entrance is a coinstar machine.  Everytime I checked there was nothing, today I decided to check it figuring there'd be nothing.  But yes there was 2 coins.  After I got home I checked what they were.  I got 2 Roosevelt silver dimes a 1946 and a 1964 D, these are my first silver found in a machine.

Why do I feel like a thief in the night when picking up change that someone has left behind or overlooked? Found $1 in dimes the other day. Can't retire yet! Still, its nice to know we live in a country so rich, people still overlook money.

recent finds include a sterling silver ring and a 3 month chip from AA.

Got to add parking meter to the list. I was trying to load the meter the other day with a few Canadian dimes, which they always take here, and it didn't do anything. I gave it a little shake...and out pops a quarter, then another, then another. Ended up with $1.35 when I was through. The meter still refused money. I chanced it and didn't get a ticket .

I found 2 clad quarters on the floor next to the machine.
Both coins were tails up so I picked them up and left
them on the machine. If I see a coin on the ground heads up,
it means good luck and you can take it. If its tails then it
means bad luck if you take it.

I am the same way. If it is heads up I give to who ever I am with so they can share in the good luck.  Tails I leave it, some time there will be a couple of pennies on the ground at the local conv store parking lot, only pick up the lucky ones.

i too used to leave the tails down pennies alone(superstitious)   but my wife used to say they were pennies from heaven(someone who passed)...and would pick them up heads or tails so now i pick them up and my luck hasn't changed one bit(fingers croosed)

check out my "the CLAW strikes " post in todays finds *--today I got --- a matched set of TMA 925 silver post type earring with diamond chips or cz stones (they were complete) with their backings still attached (it was  the backings that were marked  TMA 925 -- Plus a gold post type ball earring with a stainless post -- I'm unsure if  the ball is real or just gold plated---  heres the trick I used to get em-- reach thru the holes in the coin dump tray with a "mechanic's lost nut grabber" --- its a spring loaded tool with a claw on the end for fetching dropped nuts from tight places -- great for nabbing those earrings 

found a 2004 and two 1985 Canadian quarters on the magnet at the bank today.

the claw strikes again -- 22 long rifle bullet (unfired - intact) and found a cent stilll in the dump tray. -- not much but it all adds up overtime

the " claw " ( a car mechanic's spring  loaded nut pick up tool ) got me --- a rather smallish 1993 ---10 ore norway coin (the last year it was made) from the "junk catcher" tray under the holed coin dump tray at the local winn dixie coin star  --- its fun "fishing" thru the holes for silver , gold and stone earrings and such --this coin was hard to get since the coin was about the same size as the holes in the dump tray --

I found all these coins in the reject tray: 1979 Canadian quarter,1981 Canadian quarter, 1986 Canadian quarter,two 1965 Canadian nickels,1996 ten pence coin, 2003 Canadian cent, 3 chewed up American pennies and a Virginia Marine Science Museum elongated/squished penny.

There was someone in front of me in line at the coin counter. After that guy left to cash his receipt, I approached the machine, and a 2005 25 cent Bahamas coin popped out in the reject slot. I have found Bahamas cents before, but never a quarter.

Yesterday I found my first silver coin in a coinstar reject bin, a 1946-D dime. I looked in and only saw a penny but when I went to grab it out I felt the dime which was standing on edge against the front lip. Hopefully it's the first of many more to come. -HH-Garbageman

How do you check the magnet? Does that have to be done by an employee or is it accessible?

On most machines the magnet is located at the chute you are dumping the coins into. Just feel inside around the sides before you start the machine.

Leaving the grocery store I saw a woman emptying a bunch of coins into the green machine, so I put my stuff in the car to buy some time, then came back. It paid off. She was done and walked away leaving:

We have a Coinstar machine in the store where I work at I find all kinds of odd coins in the little tray at the bottom(the reject tray).I often fine old US coin from the 1900's-1940's that don't actually still look a real coin,also lots of mexican coins and coins from Europe and yes I do keep'em.

Snagged 2 more pennies (Zincolns) from the CoinStar today.

Tonight while checking out at the grocery store I noticed that they moved the green machine on the left side of the exit.  It used to be at a corner that you have to walk up to it. It would look funny without a bag of coins.  So I told myself that I'd better take a peek when I was walking out.  I always hope to find a steel cent because I never be able find one from the box.  When I got there I did notice a coin in the reject tray.  I picked it up and look at it briefly. My heart almost skipped a beat.  It is a seated dime! This one has enough details that it goes into my US type album.





I definitely will check the tray every time when I buy grocery from now on.

Found a "homeless stash" today. My usual quick look at the green machine looked uneventful, just a couple of abandoned bags on the ledge. I moved them and found a pile of badly corroded zincolns beneath. I quickly gathered them up.

Looking thru them yielded some interesting finds:

107 ugly, gray zincolns that will probably end up in the garbage. Some weighed as little as 1.3 grams, almost half what they should. One actually broke in half!

1 copper cent (1971), the oldest but he held up just fine.

A couple years ago, I saw the coin reject bin FULL of coins. Most of them were forign, but I think some were US. Also, once I found 3 silver Roosies (2) 1962, (1) 1964.

Some foreign coins, euros, canadian and mexican.  us error penny and a steel penny.  quite a few wheaties..

Talked to the guy who services the machine today and he told me the company has collected 1.1 BILLON dollars in change this year so far.

Found a Indian 1 rupee, a 2 cent euro, and a cut up 1977 penny today while I was dumping clad.  Two were in the reject slot, one was on the floor.

No date Buffalo in my change from the soda machine today. 

Coins everywhere around the green machine today.

 - 2 zincolns in the reject slot

 - 1 dime near the edge of the basket that someone missed

 - 1 Canadian loonie dollar (2006 RCM) on the ledge

 - 1 heavily corroded dime on the floor (196?) that weighs 1.6 grams. It has a silver ring to it but that might be from the loss of metal. No visible mintmark on the back.

The casino where I work installed a Coinstar a few months ago but I've yet to find anything...until today.

The reject slot held a nice steel penny bonanza (nine P-mint, two S) plus a 1928 wheatie and a 1971 British new penny.

 

Turned on dump machine and hear the jingle of a large dollar. Turned to be an Ike. Also, a 64 rosie left behind in the reject tray.

THe CoinMaster machine in the Safeway near my house has been Out of Order for most of the last few years.  I still compulsively check it from time to time, since I once found silver dimes in its reject tray.  It's finally working again, and I've already found two silver dimes (1952, 1964-D).

I don't know if this works on all vending machines, but on the one we have here at work, you can put change in the machine, then hit the coin return and the machine gives you change back, but it's not the same change you put in the machine. Sometimes I'll cycle quarters, dimes or nickels through the machine, looking for something old. I did find a 1958 dime and a bunch of nickels from the 1950s.

Got a 67 & a 68 Kennedy Monday at a bank coin counter.

Had a profitable 2 days, 2 silver dimes from the coinstar and a 1.50 in clad from the coin machine at the bank while dumping 
$ 100.00 in halfes.

Saw a guy dumping a large container of coins into the green machine today. Did some shopping and checked out the reject slot afterwards...nada. But he left a nice big Hungarian 50 forint (1995) on the ledge.

TD is the major coin machine in my area that takes halves .I go in and try to see if the "white"chute is blocked or not .If it isnt i usually dump in  99.50 in halves mixed with pennies and or dimes.The majority of TDs fill at $100.For some reason the machines often are empty of halves when i dump.If i can see the "white" chute i noticed it often has rejects sitting there without falling so i scoop them out. If the chute is blocked i puposely fill it [with extra halves in my pockets] to get the blocked rejects.

The reject tray of the CoinMaster machine at my local supermarket was full of pennies!  36 of 'em, including a 1950-D wheat.

My best ever was a 1921-D Morgan in the garbage next to my bank's coin counter.  I doubt that I will EVER top that.

 At the store i work at the managers  give me all the rejected coins from the coin machine for me and my son we get a ziplock bag a week it just amaze me how many coins we get some are silver us coins all the managers look out for any old coins for us and old bills it is like a big hunt for all of us .   Happy hunting RON

hey guys, just thinking if u only check the reject tray, cuz ive probably found more money on the silver dumping tray thingy part on top...look carefully cuz coins really blend in with the steel top.
i dont know if this is really a big deal, and dont know if it counts seeing as it was on the ground, not next to a coin machine, but here is my story:
i was walking, looked down saw 2 pennies & decided to waste my time & pick 'em up...i looked at them & one was a blank planchet! ive searched thousands of $ in coins never found one until i picked up those 2 pennies on the ground!

I work at a grocery store so I scope out the coinstar alot....so far I have about $3 face in silver (mostly dimes) with the best being a 1941 merc, and also 3 steel wheats. Have alot of foriegn currency and some tokens too...

Not sure if my best is considered a coin machine find but it was brought to my attention because of it. $23 face or something close bought by the store because the people complained that the coinstar wasnt taking it. I bought all the silver which included a roll of unc 1964 halfs, 3 morgans (1 cc), a couple peace, some bens and some walkers.

Found 4 Canadian quarters (oldest 1969), a wheatie (41) and three chewed up zinclons.
