Well I thought I would try for some more capbadges on the Dump field & got a couple (that I need again).

A hallmarked silver ring - Birmingham - 1894

Star find - A coin which has been on my top 5 wish list for years:

Julius Caesar silver Denarius - dated 49-48BC - 100 years before the conquering of Britain.

Julius was the first to invade Britain but failed.  Looking at the coin it has 100 years of wear & although minted in Rome came over in the late 1st century AD.
See better example:

Thanks, I'm still getting over the shock, last thing we expected.  Yesterday was my worst day in ages & today a find of a lifetime.  This is an amazing hobby.  Hope I can still do it at 90 years old!!!

Also note the strange coincidence - the capbadge found shortly afterwards has a small elephant on the bottom.  After over 50 badges this is the first with it on.  SPOOKY

Well the only way to go now is a Celtic Gold Stater or a Roman Gold Coin.  Very unlikely, but thats what I thought about the Bronze Age until this year. Smiley

Doesn't it seem incredible that the maker of that coin was sitting there thinking, "What date shall I put on this coin?"  "Let's see, Jesus is going to be born 48 or 49 years from now so I'll date it 49BC, that should work."  Just kidding!  You keep outdoing yourself with each new find.  I can't even contemplate finding something 2,056 years old!  You are truly a "Treasure Hunter". I went and looked for a gold Stater, got rained out, went back after the rain to a church.  Found a key and some trash in the church yard, an older Gent came by and asked what I was looking for, after some conversation he said the church yard where I was detecting was a graveyard, grass now, and he could remember the iron crosses that used to be there.  Gack!  I don't do grave yards unless they are plowed fields, LOL!  I left, it was a short hunt.  No gold stater.  On the up side, the farmers here have started harvesting winter wheat, can't wait to get back on the fields.  HH, Mike

I only said on here the other week that this year is going to be one of my best.  But I wasn't expecting it until harvest time. So this was an early bonus!  I notice that France/Germany have harvested & I will be watching in envy as the finds flood in.

Jackpot indeed!  What a beautiful coin!  It's a great thing to be able to hold something that was made by human hands so long ago and wonder what their lives must have been like.

A few years ago, I "hopped the pond" to see Hadrian's Wall and a few of the forts..my regret is that I didn't have more than a few hours in Colchester.  One of these days, I'll make it back there and make that area the priority.  Find Roman occupied Britain really fascinating.  Boudica is my heroine  Cheesy

Keep digging and posting-you are on to something good there!

Luck plays a big part in detecting.  Specially as I was running out of options again & they ploughed this field which will give me weeks of work.  Until the harvest comes Grin

AWSOME FINDS:

Doesn't the English government want all artifact finds be reported to them? I read on one of the British metal detecting sites i`ve been to and it said all finds have to go through them.

Is this true and do you get to keep the coin? HOPE SO:)

That's a great find, but in America we don't have the chance to find those kind of coins.
Excellent find Crusader,I wish you many more!! To all those who think you can't find anything like that here in the u.s. you'd better think again! Three years ago my dad took an 87 AD roman bronze off the coast of maine.Although not silver and not quite as old as yours crusader it has been authenticated and is probably the oldest coin ever found in the u.s.. Does it prove anything?Maybe, maybe not, there's no telling how it got there but what it does prove is that you should never underestimate what might come out of the ground next in the most unlikely place.Congrats again,  Bootstrap

Ya never know what ya gonna pull out-the ground!!

Crusader:

Congrats on your find: fantastic.
A comment about "tyre kicker's" coin: If it is not an original, it is not a legal copy in the States since it does not comply with the Hobby Protection Act which dictates what a replica coin must contain, and the legal dimension of the word 'COPY' that must be incursed into each replica.

Your coin is great.
Some say it was the first coin struck in the name of Julius Caesar. It is ID-ed as Sear # 1399. The elephant trampling a serpent signifies Caesar's conquest of 'good over evil'; the Romans over the Gauls. The images on the reverse are the 'possession' of Caesar's rank (sometimes indicated as 'Pontifex Maximus' --high priest).  These objects are the simpulum (backwards "J" object--a vessel), a 'sprinkler', an axe and a priest's hat.

A couple of years ago this coin fetched between $500 and $600 in Fine to Very Fine condition.
Again, great find!!
Don.....

Same over here but with the mark 'WRL' which it has.

Yes, I'm aware that some coins there are marked with WRL representing a reproduction mark. But please tell me if that means Westair Reproduction Limited, Winter Reproduction Limited or some other name. Is that a private company name or the 'official' way of designating a replica coin in your country?
Thanks,
Don.

As far as I'm aware it has to be marked or altered in a significant way so as to make it clear to the buyer that its not original.

OH MY Gawwwwd! To think that coin has not seen the light of day for 2000 years just blows my mind. Great find..can I come over to your house and play?

PS what are some of the next oldest/most valuable coins you have found, as we all know old doesn't always mean valuable?
HH
Blue

Someone is already coming over to play, wouldn't say who ;)

Most valuable - either my Gold Qter Noble of 1451 or Celtic Silver unit - recorded as the 7th one found (now 14 recorded examples)
