I'm still drooling over it...hahaha. So far, I have 5 Colonials for the year. My goal was 4, so I passed it.

I hope I am on a streak. But, I would like to see Paco get the next one. It would be cool.

What I find interesting is that we never had a ship on our coinage until 1937, see a similar one above.  Funny enough it was called a Ship halfpenny, wonder if there is a link??

Updated:

Having just read about it, the ship was modelled on a British Token.  These were toterated illegal coinage but not offical.  So the first time a ship was used on offical coinage was 1937.

The real Irony about that Half Penny was that the USA in it's attempt to completely seperate from england didn't want to use the same monitary system. They abandoned the Pennyand went for something a little easier to use. Our dollar is divided into 100 parts called cents, The One Cent is the coin that America has used from the beginning as it's standard of currency,
We don't make pennies, I hope we never do.

Effectively since 1967 when we went decimal we have Cents as well, we just call them Pennies.  Before 1967 there was 12 Pence to the Shilling.  20 Shilling in a pound, therefore 240 Pennies to the Pound.
Now we have 100 Pence to the Pound (Cent??)

Paco and I may get back out to the site. It is hit pretty damn hard, but I know there are some Colonials still there.

I wish the kind farmer would cut his crops and till the field. hahaha

I am starting to think something more than a Colonial homestead was on this field. We found 5 Colonials and I know there has to be at least a few more.

Dudes, here is what some other dude sent to my email:

Hi kirk!
This is a magnificent find!!! Although struck in England, these are
actively collected by those interested in Washingtonia.  Because of the
corrosion, I don't know that you could get $100 for it.  Even if you
attempted to clean it, collectors shy away from cleaned coins and this one
would need harsh cleaning.  It's very important in that it was found.  Were
other contemporaneous coins found at the site?  It could help place the time
it was lost.  I'd like to forward your email to a friend - Phil Mossman, who
keeps records of finds like this.  I've never heard of one of these being
found by a detectorist - congratulations!!!

It is hard to say what exactly could have been there..From the research I have done when we found our colonial field....20 acre field along the Kinderhook creek... We found over 200 coins in this field. These coins became virtually worthless over night when the US made their own coins...SO....they were tossed away...Perhaps the homesite that was there was one of a wealthy person who had an abundance of Colonials?? I guess without going back in time you will never know...Just keep digging and finding what is there...I remember when we found our field o coppa.... It was freshly tilled and we were finding them on the surface. Ahh...The memories!!! Oh BTW it paid to be young at that time...I could out run all the old guys to the coins!!! hehe

Incredible find Kirk! .  Reading all you guys, seeing all the coins I only dream about has been the highlight of my life since my attorney, ex-spousal unit, her attorney, guardian ad litem and judge all got together to take my kids & retirement account & all else of value four years ago.  They somehow missed my two detectors and coin collection.  The coins and baseball card collection dating from 1899-current are all my 10 year olds will inherit when I move on to (hopefully) better hunting.  Never underestimate how much your chatter (all of it) might raise the spirits of an old guy whose best find this year is a washington .... clad quarter, 1997.

Thru four months of research, I've located the site of a colonial-era fort here in GA. When the temps drop below 100, I plan to start at one corner of the site and work til I drop.  If I find anything even half as nice as the 1793, I'll be sittin with you on cloud 9. If not.... what've I lost?

Keep up the good work, keep sharing your finds.  Some of us can only enjoy TH'ing thru your finds.

Those early PA settlers did too much and that is why coppas are found in abundance!

Darn nice half cent!  Looks like it is in really good shape.  So many of them yu can bareliy make out what they are.

My worse antic was when  I was hunting a tot lot in the sand.  I have trouble getting up and down anyway because of an old injury to my back, but...As I was struggling to get up, my feet slipped in the sand and I did a complete back flip right in front of God and two little kids.  After checking and finding nothing broken I was limping off when one of the kids ran up to me and said,"  Could you do that again?  Billy wasn't looking and didn't get to see it"!  I stopped myself just before I stabbed him in the heart with my digging tool!  Monty

Hey Kirk, even I have to admit you have an awesome find!  It is a beauty and possibly the find of the year.  I still think you should join the military and fight against the Barack Hussein Obamas.  You would be a great leader however, you just do not know your potential.  HH, Mike

Congrats on an excellent find, Kirk!

And also on making the banner so quickly

Once again, a very entertaining post.

Thanks for sharing, Dude.

Thanks, Paul, I have such a passion for this hobby and love to show it in my posts. All of my family members call me, "obsessed," but can you blame me? hehehe

I love uncovering the Colonial past. Paco and I have a great site to hit. I can't wait until he turns the field with his tractor. giggle

HH!

Kirk..You DA MAN. Letme know if you need a green horn from Wisconsin to come over and pick up some of your slack! I'd LOVE to find a coin like that! With the junk I find, posts like yours are the only thing that keep me (and my wifey who always wonders if I'd wasted monery on a detector) with a positive attitude! Great job. I always look forward to posts of your new finds!
