Wingman Tony and I got out to hunt for a few hours this morning. He's still getting used to his new Garrett and loves it.  I'm still swinging my BH and have no regrets.

The first significant item found was Tony's, and I took this picture of him before I even got over there to see what he found...

1.JPG

And it was a beauty!  His first U.S. Army Infantry slouch hat pin (Bugle - not crossed rifles)!  Damn I was excited for him...

2.JPG

However - not to be outdone, I found my own pin 5 minutes later... well, most of one anyway...  Tongue

3.JPG

4.JPG

In case your wondering what they are supposed to look like see the comparison below.

5.JPG

We both dug lots of gharbash but these are the keepers... all relics - and all left by infantry soldiers between the late 1860s through the late 1890s on the Montana prairies.

Tony's:

6.JPG

Jim's: (Oh yea, and a nice Eagle button with no backmark...)

7.JPG

8.JPG

Not as excitng as Bdoo's 8 million rings but dang we had a fun day!  Thanks as always for looking!

Jim,
Although it wasn't exactly a BDoo hunt, you guys still found some neat relics to toot your own horn to. Or should I say "bugles"?  As always, great pictures. I'm sure Wingman is hooked now.
Was it 110 degrees again?

Outstanding finds, what a day! Do you Montanians(?) ever come across Indian Artifacts, if so What are the laws governing the finding of these Items? As I have always wanted to dirt hunt in Montana.

You can NOT take anything from the national sites... however, private property is not a problem.  I have done no indian artifact hunting here, but have a buffalo jump site on private property with permission that I'm dying to get to... it's a matter of time.

Disclaimer: I have no idea what the laws are concerning indian artifacts.

Are these relics rare?

Rare for the area... not SO rare on a CW site.  The CW ushered out the use of these hat badges and during the Indian wars (out west/post CW) the infantry used crossed rifles.  So finding these out here is one helluva cool find IMO.

Of course we have found tons of harmonica reed boards, hundreds of bullets & shells, and over 100 eagle buttons at the site we hunt.

Much more interesting if from a battle field, not so much from peacetime operations...

However... these finds (and others I have posted here) often/could have belonged to soldiers of notability during the era, who were involved in the famous and major operations of the region.

the finds are interesting nontheless to us anyway after completing the research and knowing what outfits they probably came from. Mostly because many of the items may have been at the very battles back east that are so famous - except those soldiers survived to bring them out west after the CW.

I stopped at one of the Bozeman Trail forts the other day and I see that
the archie's had dug up a couple of large cents (1846 & 1851) so the
troopers must have carried a little change with them and maybe you'll
find some of them also along with the neat hat pins and relics.  While there
I bought a raffle ticket on an old CW rifle with the Alin conversion.  If I win it, it'll be the only relic I'll ever see.

Congrats on the finds and banner.

Thanks... The coins are FEW and far between... my only notable is a 1877 cc seated dime.

Please remember that during the CW there was a draft going on.  Oregon residents who were drafted generally stayed in the west and fought indians at the same time the war was going on.  If you look at the eagle button you found they are CW era buttons.  I am not good on the bugle you found but it may also go back to the war era.  Super nice finds guys.  Keep it up.

There is NO question that many of the (over one hundred dug) eagles in this area are CW era... the bugle is an "infantry" pin - pre crossed rifles.

Great finds.  What really impresses me, is that it's the middle of January, and you are out digging, in short sleeves, the grass is green, and I don't see any snow, and you're in Montana?

I'm living wrong.. Lots of more luck.
